Living Theology was set up by the Society of Jesus more than 50 years ago to offer the opportunity for lay people to learn about and discuss theological and ethical questions with approachable and knowledgeable lecturers, mainly Jesuits but also others with particular expertise. There are Living Theology summer schools of different lengths in various parts of the United Kingdom and details of all of these are given on the website which you can access here.

In the north-east, Living Theology has taken place at Ushaw College and Ampleforth in the past, but moved to the Bar Convent in York in 2012. This year, four lecturers are offering six different courses and a series of plenary lectures in the very pleasant and welcoming surroundings of the Bar Convent. The atmosphere is relaxed and there are many opportunities to meet with, and talk to, both lecturers and other participants during the day and in the evenings. The majority of participants are Catholic, but many people of other denominations have been welcomed over the years.

Most people choose to attend the full 2 ½ days, but for those who have not been before, there is also the possibility of coming for a single day and doing just one course as a taster.

Booking forms can be downloaded from the website above, and any queries or bookings should be addressed to Jocelyn Caramello at jo@caramello.org.uk or the address on the attached poster.

In our work with young people in our Diocese we have become increasingly aware of the vital importance of good and appropriate Confirmation preparation material – such material can be difficult to find. All too often what we faced was dated material which fails to speak to our young people.

We set ourselves the task of creating a totally new, fresh and dynamic Confirmation Preparation programme. It is essential that any such project should be grounded in Scripture, be faithful to the Catechism and relevant to the lives of young people today. It is also important that it should be clear, practical, and address the pertinent and challenging issues which can arise during Confirmation preparation. The result is our I am Confirmed Confirmation programme.

The programme consists of I am Confirmed – Leader’s Guide

full colour throughout

contains six complete session plans

photographic resources

parish liturgies

all the material required for a complete well grounded course

Retreat Day plan following the celebration of Confirmation in your parish.

The candidate’s I am Confirmed – magazine reflects and complements the I am Confirmed programme whilst also offering ideas and inspiration for candidates in the days following their Confirmation. The magazine will also enhance any other Confirmation preparation material, proving a valuable addition to your input.

In order to make this unique pastoral resource available to others we are offering the programme at a realistic cost for parishes and youth groups throughout the country.

I am Confirmed – Leader’s Guide costs £16 + p&p

I am Confirmed – candidate magazine costs £3.00 + p&p

Orders can be placed by telephoning Sue Paterson on 01642 850505 or by reception@dioceseofmiddlesbrough.co.uk For further information please see www.iamconfirmed.co.uk

In September, the new Handbook of Short Courses was launched at three different venues in the diocese – Hull, York and Middlesbrough.

Fr John Lumley, diocesan Director of Adult Formation, writes: (more…)

In September, the new Handbook of Short Courses was launched at three different venues in the diocese – Hull, York and Middlesbrough. Fr John Lumley, diocesan Director of Adult Formation, writes:

I would just like to say a really big thank you to all those people who turned out in such great numbers for the launch of our Handbook. There were people from virtually every parish in the diocese, which is so heartening, and many of the clergy took the time to attend themselves, along with their parish representatives. The atmosphere in each venue was very positive – people are clearly very keen to have this new resource, which will enable each parish to organise and plan for itself its own programme of events, talks, workshops, study days and days of reflection. And because of the generosity of the people who are offering these courses, everything in the Handbook is deliverable on the doorstep – the speakers are all willing to come to each parish, or parish cluster, to deliver their talk. I was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of those present – there was a real sense of something new happening in our diocese.

The discussion at the launches threw up some interesting ideas. One is to use our network of Adult Formation contacts as a resource to advertise local talks to the neighbouring parishes. We will be able to do that because now well over 80% of our parishes have a designated parish Adult Formation contact person. The other major suggestion, which we hope to be able to act on, is to use our section of the diocesan website to advertise the details of when and where courses are being put on throughout the diocese. That will obviously help to advertise these local events to a wider audience. So do keep an eye on the website, as the Handbook is available there for anyone to download, and we will be constantly updating the Handbook on the website, as new courses and speakers become available (eg we hope soon to add courses on Music in the Liturgy, and on the Church’s ministry to those in prison).

Jane Cook (our Adult Formation Adviser) and I would like to renew our thanks to those who so generously hosted the launch evenings. We look forward to seeing you and working with you in your own parish communities.
