By the time you read this article, Harvest Fast Day may well have been and gone. However, we thought that we would still like to inform you about the focus of this year’s Harvest Fast Day. You are probably only too well aware that the traditional Harvest and Lent Fast Days are the two main CAFOD fundraising appeals in dioceses throughout England and Wales. Last year, parishes in Middlesbrough Diocese donated around £100,000 during the two Fast Day appeals. Read More

As you may have read in the local evening press, ‘Eleven Not-so-grumpy Men’ undertook a rain soaked 16 mile walk from the Cathedral to Mount Grace to raise funds for CAFOD on 5th July. The rain did not dampen their spirits though and they cheerfully endured the inclement weather for the duration of the walk and sought solace in one of Osmotherley’s hotels at the end of the walk to dry out over a beer, when the sun decided to put in an appearance! Well done to them all for their efforts!

The above words, sounding remarkably contemporary, were actually written by St Ambrose in the fourth century, as a reflection upon starvation amongst the poor of his day. They are amongst many quotations and insights from two thousand years of Catholic Social Teaching, to be found in ‘The Call of Creation’ - a very inspiring document published by the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales.
