Scarborough’s ‘Outstanding’ Catholic High School

Staff and pupils at St Augustine’s School are celebrating after achieving an outstanding OFSTED report. The School has been given a grade one ‘outstanding’ result following its June inspection. The inspectors said the Roman Catholic School, in Sandybed Lane, was continuously improving and the standards were very high.

The report said: ‘St Augustine’s is a very caring school in which pupils are well supported and enjoy their learning. ‘The strong Catholic ethos permeates all aspects of the school’s work. ‘The curriculum offered is outstanding; it is very flexible and responsible and the range of extra-curricular activities is excellent.’

Headteacher Roger Cannon said: ‘I am absolutely delighted with the report. To be labelled outstanding is very pleasing and gratifying. The school has improved so much over the last few years and hopefully we can improve even more. We have a great team of staff here and everyone is so pleased with the results of the inspection.’

The report spoke highly of Mr Cannon, commenting that his excellent leadership had helped improve the School. ‘The headteacher is very forward-looking. An inspired management re-structure last September renewed focus on learning and the team of directors and learning leaders is already playing a key role in taking the school into the next phase of its development.’

The inspectors commented: ‘Over the last five years the school has been transformed from a failing school to one in which pupils’ achievement and their personal development and wellbeing are outstanding.’

It continued: ‘The Headteacher and Governors have taken decisive and effective action to tackle poor teaching, low standards and inadequate resources.’

Mr Cannon took over as Headteacher of the School in 2001. At that time there were around 350 pupils and now the School has 500.
