Fifty children from St Martin’s Ampleforth Prep School are celebrating having reached the penultimate round of the BBC Songs of Praise 2010 School Choir of the Year competition.

The school is having to compete in the senior section of the competition, against sixth form students, but will be the youngest choir in this section as there are no children over the age of 13 in the St Martin’s Ampleforth choir and the youngest choir member is just eight.

The second round audition takes the form of a filmed performance of the choir which is then viewed by a panel of judges who decide which three junior schools and which three senior schools make it to the televised final next March in The Queen Elizabeth Hall, London.

‘It is a huge compliment to all associated with the school choir, not least the pupils, that their commitment, dedication and talent has the opportunity to be appreciated and recognised at a national level’ said Nicholas Higham, Headmaster.

The competition can be followed on the BBC Songs of Praise web pages.
