History

Mass was celebrated in Redcar from around 1874. Subsequently, a small church dedicated to the Sacred Heart was opened on Thrush Road and a school-chapel was built on Lobster Road. The building of a permanent church in Lobster Road established the Catholic community in the heart of the town. St Augustine was built in 1937 (architect F Spink), to serve the eastern end of the town, St William was built to serve Domanstown and later St Alban was built to serve post-war estates. St Alban’s closed in 2011 and St William’s in 2012 and the parishes were united with the Sacred Heart. On January 1 2015, a new parish of Blessed Nicholas Postgate was formed through the union of the parishes of the Sacred Heart and St Augustine. On January 1 2020 St Bede’s Church which had been built in 1936-7 originally as a Chapel of Ease to Saltburn (architect F Spink) then later altered and extended (architect Norman Richardson) joined with the other two churches in a renewed Parish of Blessed Nicholas Postgate.
