Fr Tony Storey’s Ugthorpe 2006 Homily

The late Father Tony Storey delivered a memorable homily at the Postgate Rally in Ugthorpe in the summer of 2006.

Fr Tony’s homily, delivered in his own unique way, was far-reaching and very thought-provoking. In it he talked about the readings of the day, Father Nicholas Postgate, the challenges of the world today and much more. Uniting all of these topics is the phrase ‘Do not be afraid. All manner of things will be well’.

Thankfully Father Tony’s sermon was captured on tape can now be listened to again.

Sincere thanks to Kevin Connelly for making this recording available.

(The day was windy and this affects the sound quality.)

About Father Nicholas Postgate

Some additional notes

Father Nicholas Postgate was born at the end of the sixteenth century, just before formal records of births and deaths began. He entered the English College at Douai, Flanders in 1621 to study for the priesthood. He returned, now an ordained Roman Catholic priest (and therefore regarded as a traitor) to Yorkshire in 1630.

He was arrested at Ugglebarnby near Whitby in 1679 and was hanged, drawn (disembowelled) and quartered at York shortly afterwards.

About Father Tony Storey

Father Tony Storey was born in the East Riding of Yorkshire in 1919, one of eight children; their father was manager on the estate in the Wolds owned by Lady Nunburnholme, granddaughter of the Duke of Wellington. Unsurprisingly he developed a great love for, and knowledge of the countryside.

He followed an older brother, Peter (later Vicar General of the Middlesbrough Diocese), into the English College in Rome before both were forced to flee on the outset of the Second World War.

Ordained in 1943, he studied history at Christ College Cambridge and was captain of the college rugby team.

He served his priestly ministry in Middlebrough, Stokesley, Cottingham and Hull; his support for ecumenism led to his being the first Roman Catholic priest to preach in York Minster since the Reformation. A great advocate and worker for justice and peace he visited Sierra Leone and, with the support of his parish at Cottingham, helped establish a mission there.
