On Wednesday 2nd March, the Cathedral celebrated Benediction with Solemn Vespers. This is the first time in over 15 years that this beautiful service has taken place in the Cathedral with music that included congregational hymnody, with psalmody led by the recently formed Middlesbrough Ladies Schola Cantorum.
The lovely clear chanting of the Schola was a delight to hear, as was the fine setting of the Magnificat for women’s voices by Grassi, and Peter Hurford’s delightful motet ‘A Litany to the Holy Spirit’. The music added a wonderful sense of prayerfulness and solemnity to the celebration. It is such a joy to be able to hear a choir of such a high standard in the Cathedral and the congregation were clearly delighted and deeply moved.
Benediction and Solemn Vespers will next be celebrated at the Cathedral on Wednesday 6th April at 6.30 pm when we will once again be joined by the Schola Cantorum. The motet on this occasion will be the famous setting of ‘Stabat Mater’ by Pergolesi.
On Wednesday 4th May, the newly formed Middlesbrough Cathedral Boys Choir will make its debut at the 6.30 pm celebration of Benediction and Solemn Vespers.
