New Ampleforth Clubhouse Opened and Blessed

Ampleforth College Golf Club’s new Clubhouse was opened and blessed by the Procurator of Ampleforth Abbey, Fr Wulstan Peterburs. The clubhouse was financed and built by the members of the Club themselves in just six months. The Chairman of the Club, Mr Richard York, praised the community that had built such a splendid clubhouse. He paid tribute to the generosity of the members, the skill of the building team drawn from the membership and the help given by the Trustees of Ampleforth Abbey, the Ryedale Society of Model Engineers and the Gilling East Village Hall Committee.

Following the ceremony, an inaugural match was played between the Club and a team representing St Martin’s Ampleforth Prep School, which resulted in an honourable draw.

The Club hopes and believes that the facilities of the new Clubhouse – changing rooms, toilets and washing facilities, in addition to a relaxing clubroom, will help the Club attract new members. The nine hole course, which doubles to 18 through the use of alternate tees, is an attractive and challenging course set in undulating parkland around Gilling Castle in the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A year’s full membership costs a modest £250.00 but you need not become a member to play the course. You can play nine holes for only £10.00 or £4.00 if you are a junior. Eighteen holes costs only £15.00 (£7.00 for a junior). Whatever you choose, Ampleforth Abbey Golf Club provides good, challenging, golf at bargain
