The Newman Association is a national organisation for lay people and clergy, to foster a deeper understanding of the faith in the context of the contemporary world through talks, discussions and workshops at local level and through national conferences. Named after Cardinal Newman, who supported the need for an educated laity, the Association is the British member of the International Catholic Movement for Intellectual and Cultural Affairs ‘Pax Romana’. It is organised through local circles throughout the country.
The Teesside branch is the ‘Cleveland Newman Circle’; present members have addresses from North Yorkshire to Tyne and Wear – straddling the two Dioceses of Middlesbrough, and Hexham and Newcastle.
Most meetings are currently held in the meeting room of St Bernadette’s Nunthorpe Middlesbrough at 7.30pm. These usually consist of six open speaker meetings between September and April; plus other meetings/events at other times.
