The Bishop of Middlesbrough the Rt Rev Bishop Terence Patrick Drainey is seeking to appoint a practising Catholic as Deputy Director of Education to work in his Diocesan Schools Service Department.

Working to the Diocesan Director of Schools, the Deputy Director will primarily oversee the development and implementation of the Bishop’s religious education programme by providing direct training and support across all 54 diocesan schools.

In addition, the Deputy Director will also support the wider needs of diocesan schools, assisting the Director of Schools in the ongoing development, improvement and sustainability of high-quality Catholic education in the diocese.

Working with parishes, Catholic academy trust boards, chief executives, head teachers, governors and schools, the Deputy Director will provide ongoing training and formation to support the delivery of outstanding religious education, co-ordinating the delivery and moderation of curriculum RE across the diocese.

The Deputy Director will also support the delivery of high-quality acts of collective worship in all schools and help sustain and further develop the strong Catholic ethos and Catholic life in all of our schools and trusts.

The Deputy Director will also monitor and challenge on wider diocesan school performance matters, supporting schools to ensure the children and young people they serve realise their full spiritual, moral and academic potential.

Formed in 1878, the diocese comprises the local authority areas which historically formed the North Riding of Yorkshire, namely Redcar and Cleveland, parts of Stockton on Tees, Middlesbrough, York, parts of North Yorkshire, parts of East Riding and Kingston upon Hull.

Across the diocese there are 46 primary and eight secondary schools all of whom are planned to be in one of three large regional Catholic academy trusts.

The Bishop is seeking an experienced high-quality leader with extensive knowledge and understanding of Catholic education and a proven track record of success for this new innovative role within the Diocesan Schools’ Service team.

This is an exciting time in the development of diocesan education when the Diocesan Schools Service is helping the Bishop to implement new school structures that will ensure and further enhance his vision for Catholic education in the diocese. As Deputy Director you will have a key role in ensuring the Bishop’s vision is realised.

For further information and an “in confidence” conversation about the role, please contact Kevin Duffy, Diocesan Director of Schools, on 01642 850515.

Please note, this post is offered under diocesan Terms and Conditions, including entry to the diocesan pensions scheme.
