Diocese Seeks New Director Of Music

Full Time (35 hours per week), Permanent Contract
Salary: In the region of £35,000 with pension contribution
Based at: St Mary’s Cathedral, Middlesbrough
Starting: December 2021/January 2022

The Diocese of Middlesbrough is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and appropriately qualified Director of Music to lead the development of music within the diocese.

The Director of Music, working closely with the Dean, is responsible for the day-to-day provision of music at St Mary’s Cathedral. The Director conducts the diocesan choir and is responsible for providing music for major liturgies throughout the church year.

However, the role extends beyond the cathedral and into the diocese and, in addition to advising on music provision for the main episcopal liturgies at other churches, the director works with parishes to develop choirs and musicianship at all levels.

The role also involves some work within local diocesan schools, working closely with teachers and the diocesan Choral Director as part of the National Schools Singing Programme (NSSP). The Director of Music will be responsible for the delivery of the NSSP in 6 to 8 diocesan schools.

The Director of Music sits on the Bishop’s Council for Spirituality and Worship to advise the committee on musical matters, as well as providing training to diocesan musicians and arranging the music on education days organised by the council.

The Diocese of Middlesbrough extends from Middlesbrough in the north to Hull in the south and includes York. As the role supports parishes and schools throughout the diocese, some travel in the diocese will be required and applicants must hold a UK driving licence and have use of a car.

For more detail about the role, please email the Current Director of Music, Tim Harrison, at musicdept@rcdmidd.org.uk

For a job description, person specification and application please email bishopsecretary@rcdmidd.org.uk.

Closing date for applications: August 20 2021

Interviews to take place early September 2021
