Guided Walks

Over 60 people have taken part in a town centre walk around sites with Franciscan connections. Walks continue to be available in September and October – 2.00 pm every Thursday from the Tourist Information Office, in the Friary Gardens or by arrangement for other times – tel (01748) 828742. There is no charge and the voluntary guides are – Tom Burrows, Tony Pelton, Ann Simpson and Fred Wood.

Richmond Town Council

Richmond Town Council is sponsoring the Civic Event of Saturday 27th September. The Council is inviting local Mayors to the Celebration Mass to be held in Ss Joseph and Francis Xavier Church in Newbiggin, Richmond at 11.00 am followed by a walk to the Friary Church ruins for an Ecumenical Service. Fr Dan O’Neill, on behalf of Bishop Terence Drainey, is the Principal Celebrant and concelebrants will be Rev Br Michael Copps OFM (Minister Provincial), Fr Timbo Forbes Turner, Principal Catholic Chaplain to Catterick Garrison and Rev Br Robert of the Hospitaller Order of St John of God.

Churches Together In Richmond

Churches Together In Richmond (CTIR) have fully supported the ‘750th’ and will be arranging the Ecumenical Service for the 27th. A draft is being prepared by the Rev Alan Coustick of the Methodist community in Richmond. Secretary to CTIR is Ann Simpson on (01748) 822277.

Secular Franciscans

Secular Franciscans contribution to the celebrations will be a performance of the Transitus – a service and play of the Dying of St Francis. This will follow Mass at 12.00 noon in Ss Joseph and Francis Xavier Church, in Newbiggin, Richmond on the Feast Day of St Francis, Saturday 4th October. After a short break in the Catholic Church Hall, they will walk to the Friary Church ruins for a Closing Prayer. Open to all participants (at 2.00 pm), it is anticipated over 40 Franciscans will be present and this will be the first gathering of Franciscans since the closure of the Friary in 1538.
