History

The birthplace of Nicholas Postgate, Mass was said in this area throughout the Recusant period. From the early 18th century Bridgeholme Green, the home of the Smith family, contained a chapel. In 1797 the Smith family donated land on which a chapel and priest’s house were completed the following year. This building became a school in 1867 when the present church was opened (Architect: Matthew Ellison Hadfield of Sheffield).
