St Charles ‘Drop In’ Report

Thank you to all who help – as volunteers or donors.

Especial thanks to the parishes and individuals who have been most generous, to St Charles Parish for paying the energy bills and the SVP for covering any deficit, to St Mary’s College for the huge numbers of tins they collect and to Paul and Niall (sixth formers) for a musical event at Christmas which raised £250.

We Provide

  • a friendly, welcoming environment
  • tea, coffee, squash, soup, toast and toppings, biscuits, and depending on donations, fruit, beans on toast etc
  • clothing – socks, tee shirts, jeans etc
  • advice – given by Compass and Homeless and Rootless workers.

Numbers

Last six months of 2008 an average of 35 – in 2009 we are averaging 47.

Volunteers

Some 27 people help plus St Mary’s College Junior SVP who come on Tuesdays (some even in their holidays).

The Future

  • we hope to do some much needed refurbishing of the kitchen in 2009
  • many of us are supporters of Emmaus Hull, and now there is a full time worker we expect to make real progress towards setting up a Community.

How can you help?

  • Volunteers are always needed
  • Donations always welcome
  • Clothing and bedding needed
  • Remind people that there are still homeless people in our city, some ‘rough sleepers’, others in hostels, a few struggling with personal problems on their own in flats – mostly men suffering or recovering from addictions, rejected by their families, victims of broken relationships etc. They are our ‘neighbours’.

Fortunately, there are always successes – some go on training courses, or return to their families. But there are also premature deaths.

Finally The Bishop visited the Drop In last year and encouraged us.
