Fr John Lumley/Fr Robert Lasia: “We have.”

Archbishop: “Let it be read.”

Mandate (read by Canon Alan Sheridan, Chancellor of the Diocese of Middlesbrough)

Benedict, bishop and servant of the servants of God, to our beloved son Terence Patrick Drainey, priest of the Diocese of Salford, hitherto Rector of the Seminary of St Cuthbert and now nominated Bishop of Middlesbrough, we extend greetings and our apostolic blessing.

It clearly (behests) us who should succeeded to the apostle Peter’s cross to provide appropriately for the cherished Diocese of Middlesbrough since following our venerable brother John Patrick Crowley’s resignation from its governance, a new leader is required there. You my dear son commend yourself to us in no small measure by reason of your skilful fulfilment of your task as educator and of our practical knowledge of pastoral affairs. Therefore you are seen by us as well suited to take up and to fruitfully exercise that responsibility. Having listened to the advice of the Congregation of Bishops, we now with the fullness of our apostolic authority and with confidence in you, declare you Bishop of Middlesbrough with all the duties and rights which are linked according to the prescriptions of the sacred canons with that position and purpose. You may receive Episcopal consecration anywhere in the world but not in the City of Rome, from any Catholic Bishop.

However, beforehand you must make a profession of faith and also pronounce an oath of fidelity to us and our successors according to the laws and regulations of the Church. The documents testifying to these actions signed in the customary way and sealed must be sent to the Congregation already mentioned. Moreover, we command that you ensure that this document be read to the clergy and to the people of the Diocese which is now entrusted to you and we exalt the clergy and the people willingly to welcome your coming as teacher and guide and always to remain in union with you.

In conclusion my beloved son, as you have grown strong in good works and been supported by divine grace, may you now strive to use all your powers in this new ministry so that this ecclesial community with the intercession of the Virgin Mary may enjoy life (givings) (and) spiritual blessings.

Given at Rome and St Peter’s on this seventeenth day of November in the year of our Lord 2007 and in the third year of our Pontificate Benedict the Sixteenth.

All: Thanks be to God
