St Martin’s Ampleforth Parents vs St Peter’s Parents

The parents of St Martin’s Ampleforth School challenged the parents of St Peters, York to a rugby match here at St Martin’s Ampleforth, Gilling Castle on Sunday 9th March 2008.

The match has been nicknamed ‘The Last Hurrah’ and was the idea of Nicholas Higham, Headmaster of St Martin’s Ampleforth. ‘It is more to do with a midlife crisis than anything else!’ says Nick Higham. ‘Most of the team are over 40 and all should know better. It is also an opportunity for our pupils to exact some revenge for all those years of being shouted at to tackle low.’ Training for St Martin’s Ampleforth has taken place every Friday for the last two months on the new astro turf pitch at Gilling Castle. St Martin’s Ampleforth narrowly beat the St Peter’s parents with a score of 41 to 38.

For St Martin’s Ampleforth, John Liley has played for Leicester and England and Nick Higham has played for Saracens and Headingly. Many of the team have played locally in their day.
