Mass at Burton Constable Hall

On Sunday 22nd June – the feast of Sts John Fisher and Thomas More – parishioners from The Church of The Most Holy Sacrament, Marton in Holderness, attended Mass in the private chapel in Burton Constable Hall at the invitation of the owner, Mr John Chichester-Constable. Mass was said by Fr Peter Egan, the present Parish Priest of Hornsea and Marton parish.

In Penal times, Burton Constable Hall was a place where Mass was said secretly and it is thought that Fr Nicholas Postgate may well have been one of the celebrants. The Church at Marton was built in 1789 on the Burton Constable Estate and adjoins the house that, too, was used as a secret mass site during penal times. The chapel in Burton Constable Hall was converted from a billiard room circa 1850 by the Constable family, and decorated in a Greek tradition.

Burton Constable Hall holds many historical artefacts including Priestsí vestments, some of which were worn by Fr Egan at this Mass.
