Caritas – a guide to understanding their work

Caritas in England and Wales is made up of CAFOD and CSAN (Caritas Social Action Network), who are responsible for supporting communities in response to poverty and social injustices.

They also lead in building support and welcome for refugees in our Catholic dioceses through groups and organisations affiliated to them.

CSAN provides guidance on how support can be delivered and advocate for resources on behalf of refugees who arrive and stay in the UK from the UK government and Catholic organisations.

CAFOD leads on the response to poverty and relief of suffering internationally. CAFOD liaises with sister agencies when humanitarian crises occur. Caritas sister agencies in Ukraine and surrounding countries are helping people directly.

CAFOD, as a member of the Disasters Emergency Committee in the UK, is part of their joint appeal, from which the other sister agencies will benefit

CAFOD can accept, process and quickly transfer donations to our partners who can then focus on delivering the much-needed assistance. It is through CAFOD that the Catholic community of England and Wales can give practical assistance in and around Ukraine. CAFOD’s Caritas sister organisations in Ukraine (Caritas Spes and Caritas Ukraine) and in neighbouring countries are already helping people who are affected. They have specifically asked for financial assistance rather than donations of goods
