Creative Sparks: Advent and Christmas Banners

To help us enter the spirit of the liturgical season, the Parish of Our Lady of Lourdes and St Peter Chanel in Hull joined forces in September last with the Year 10 Art and Design class at St Mary’s College. After an initial presentation of the brief and a visit to the Church, the students set to work.

The results were outstanding, highly original, and remained true to the mood and themes of the seasons. Two of the 13 banners chosen to be hung in the Church are pictured along with the class and their teacher, Mrs Olwyn Reading and Fr John O’Gara SM, our parish priest.

Two particularly striking creations were hung on the back wall of the sanctuary and a third above the entrance doors. The other banners were installed on the church pillars each Sunday of Advent and then Christmas.

With the latest technology and vinyl materials, the banners are not only rich in colour but sturdy and long-lasting. We look forward to giving commissions for feasts and special occasions.
