‘Living Theology’ now open for booking!

2008 Residential Summer School

The 2008 ‘Living Theology’ Residential Summer School will take place at Ushaw College, Durham from Sunday, 27 July to Friday, 1 August. Full details including lecture titles, names of lecturers, cost, and a downloadable application form and poster can be found on their website www.livingtheology.org.uk

The theme of the keynote lectures is ‘THE CHURCH AND THE WORLD: THE NATURE OF DIALOGUE’ with special reference to the challenge of dialogue with science, with other faiths and with relativism.

Keynote speakers are Dr Paul Murray, (Senior Lecturer in Systematic Theology and Director of Centre for Catholic Studies, University of Durham), Fr Michael Barnes, SJ (Lecturer in Interreligious Relations, Heythrop College, University of London), and Fr John Moffatt, SJ (Roman Catholic Chaplain to the University of Oxford).

From the ten options offered this year, participants choose two courses which they follow throughout the week. Subjects are varied, some of which will feed into the keynote theme.

But the week is not all about sitting in a classroom, and time for worship, relaxation and socialising is also considered important. Living Theology has been described as “somewhere that feeds mind, body and spirit”. Mass (R.C.) and other prayer time are celebrated daily. Old friendships are renewed, and new ones made over a coffee or glass of wine in the bar, or whilst strolling in the grounds. To quote Fr Dominic Robinson, SJ, Course Director Living Theology Ushaw Summer School:

“Living Theology is very special because, far more than lectures and courses, it is an experience of living our faith together. We do this through the study, but also through the Liturgy and prayer, and through the community formed during this special week.”

‘Living Theology’ is Jesuit run, and recently celebrated its 40th anniversary. Ushaw College, which is the Roman Catholic seminary for the Northern Province Dioceses of England and Wales, has excellent conference facilities for 100+ people. Christians of varying ages (mainly, but not exclusively Roman Catholic) come from many parts of the U.K. or further afield. Many return each year, but ‘first-timers’ will find a ready welcome and an atmosphere of sharing and warmth in which no one should ever feel
excluded. Young people are particularly welcome.
