‘Pray In May’ For Mission To Feed The World’s Children

An award-winning charity that was inspired by Our Lady’s example of raising a child in poverty is asking for prayers throughout the month of May for the success of its work.

Mary’s Meals was set up by former fish farmer Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow in 2002 and now works in 19 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe and the Caribbean.

It aims to provide one good meal every school day to some of the world’s poorest children and works with people of all faiths and none.

“Since our humble beginnings, Mary’s Meals, named after Mary the Mother of Jesus, has been built on a foundation of prayer and the many little acts of love from those who support us,” said supporter engagement officer (North of England) Fran Lawson.

“This May, the month traditionally dedicated to Our Lady, we invite you to join us in prayer to celebrate the wonderful work of Mary’s Meals and give thanks that we are now reaching more than 1.8m children with a nutritious meal every school day.

“We also pray for God’s continued blessing on our beautiful mission, that through his providence it will always flourish, enabling us to reach more hungry children.”

Mary’s Meals started life operating out of a tin shed in Scotland that still serves as its global headquarters to this day.

Magnus had earlier set up the charity Scottish International Relief along with his brother Fergus to send aid to war-torn Bosnia-Herzegovina.

He was inspired by a pilgrimage to the Marian shrine of Medjugorje that had led his family to convert their guesthouse into a retreat centre.

The charity is committed to keeping its running costs low and a minimum of 93p in every £1 donated is spent on charitable activities.

This is possible because most of its work is carried out by an army of volunteers in the communities it serves.

You are asked to offer prayerful support in any way you can, such as including a bidding prayer for Mary’s Meals at Mass, praying the Rosary for its work or hosting a Holy Hour.

Fran added: “We’re always keen to do talks or presentations to any parishes or parish groups who may be interested in hearing a bit more about our work. These can be done via Zoom, or in person as restrictions allow.:
