Safe at last!

News has reached friends and supporters of Anselme Noumbiwa that he has at last managed to escape from Cameroon after months spent hiding in fear of his life having been forcibly returned to his home country over the summer. His move to another African country was made possible through the generosity of individuals of all faiths and none and the Diocese of Middlesbrough. Anselme knew this last journey would not be without danger.

“I thank God for calling people to help me. I thank everyone who responded to that call”, Anselme said in a message to his supporters before quoting St Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians, “Make room for us in your hearts. We have not wronged anyone; we have not ruined anyone nor tried to take advantage of anyone.” (2 Corinthians 7:2)

Where does his path lead to now? Anselme’s hope for the future is that he can continue his Bible studies at Bible college but his priority must be to make a living so he can survive.

Anselme had hidden from us how fearful and depressed he had become during his four months of solitary confinement. During his time in detention centres in the UK we had become accustomed to him supporting us, always being positive. We knew he has great faith but the suffering of the man was never revealed to us. He is a principled, dignified and courageous young man. As he sets out on a new path, he continues to place his trust in God. He found injustice here but he also found many friends who love and respect him. He keeps us all in his heart and his prayers.
