The Speakers

Paul Moore

Paul Moore was formerly the Head of Group Regulatory Risk at HBOS, one of Britain’s largest banks with assets in 2007 of over £660bn, over 74,000 full- and part-time staff and profits before tax of £5.4bn. When the banking crisis hit, HBOS had to be rescued through a forced acquisition by Lloyds Banking Group (with government support).

Paul was the only senior risk and compliance executive in the UK banking sector to speak out publicly about what he saw from inside a bank. He gave influential evidence to the UK Parliamentary Committee in February 2008, which led to the resignation of Sir James Crosby (formerly Paul’s boss at HBOS) as Deputy Chairman of the Financial Services Authority. Sir James had dismissed Paul over Paul’s warnings about risks to customers and colleagues. Paul has maintained that the banking crisis, at its heart, was caused by inappropriate cultures and ethics.

Now advising financial regulators and financial service providers, Paul will explore the question whether it is possible to reconcile the love of money (Mammon) with an appropriate focus on the common good.

An Ampleforth ‘old boy’, Paul believes that the Social Teaching of the Church and ‘Caritas Veritate’ in particular has a great deal to offer all men of goodwill.

Lloyd Clarke QPM

Lloyd Clarke is a Trustee of the Guinness Trust and a member of the Guinness Partnership Board. He was appointed Board Chairman of Guinness Northern Counties in September 2010, the largest operating company in the group.

Lloyd has been a member of the prestigious Committee on Standards in Public Life for over six years. In 2009, the Committee carried out the much publicised inquiry into MPs’ expenses.

Lloyd was a police officer for 30 years before retiring as Chief Executive and Chief Constable of the Ministry of Defence Police and Guarding Agency. He was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal for distinguished police service in the New Year’s Honours in 1999.
