The big challenge being launched this autumn, in English Martyrs, York, together with other local parishes, is to ‘Read-a-Book-a-Month’ of the Bible.

The challenge will be supported by a music and drama event for each book, and pamphlets, specially written by York poet and storyteller, F Mary Callan. ‘For years,’ says Mary, ‘the bishops have been urging us to read the Bible, not just with our heads but with our hearts, so let’s do it!’ A choice of modern translations will be on sale during September and everyone is invited to the launch evening, focusing on the book of Genesis. Singers, musicians and actors are lending their talents, to perform an excerpt from Haydn’s CREATION, and dramatic scenes from the family stories of Genesis. ‘They were the ‘soap opera’ of their day’ says Mary. ‘Every human problem is there: bullying, teenage pregnancy, surrogacy, child abuse.’ With pamphlets on sale and delicious refreshments, the parish hopes that non-churchgoers will also find it enjoyable. ‘Buy a pamphlet for a friend,’ says Mary, ‘or leave one lying around for the family to dip into.’ ‘We’ll be reading the bible from both ends!’ comments a parishioner.
