Archivists from Britain and Ireland will meet at Ushaw College, Durham, in May for the annual conference of the Catholic Archives Society. The College, which last year celebrated the bicentenary of its establishment in Durham after years of exile in Douai, is a particularly appropriate venue for this year’s conference, which will focus on the archives of the English seminaries and other institutions founded in Europe during the years when the penal laws were in force in Britain.
The keynote speaker will be Abbot Michael John Zielinski OSB Oliv, Vice-President of the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church, who will speak on Ecclesiastical Archives and the Memory of God’s People. Other speakers include Iris Jones, archivist of the Venerable English College, Rome, Dr Simon Johnson on the English College, Lisbon, and Abbot Geoffrey Scott OSB on Benedictine archives.
Non-members are welcome to attend all or part of the conference, which takes place from 18th to 20th May, at Ushaw College. Information about the Catholic Archives Society and the conference are available on the website www.catholic-history.org.uk
