Sea-Wheeling ends with a Tribute to Remembrance Day

On 11th November, in a tribute to Remembrance Day, Apostleship of the Sea’s mammoth charity event, Sea-Wheeling, ended at Hull Cenotaph.

Sea-Wheeling is a Round-Britain Bike Ride which commenced from the port of Hull – 60 towns in 60 days with one aim – to raise funds for Apostleship of the Sea. The idea for this event came from Apostleship of the Sea Trustee, David Savage, who, in November 2008, completed a sponsored bike ride for AoS, in which he rode from Liverpool to Hull, non-stop in a day! This challenge only spiked his enthusiasm and Sea Wheeling 2010 was conceived.

David has been cycling around the coast of Britain, stopping at coastal towns along the way. After 60 days of hard work, he finished his challenge in Hull on 11th November, coinciding with Remembrance Day.

To mark the celebration, David cycled to the Hull Cenotaph in Paragon Square, and in association with the British Legion, he laid a poppy wreath from Apostleship of the Sea. He was accompanied on the last part of his ride by a team of fellow cyclists, who were met at the cenotaph by loyal supporters and the Lord Mayor of Hull. From there, David rode the final stretch to a reception and celebration at the Hull Seafarers’ Centre, where he had started his journey many weeks before.

David summed his journey up as,

In the past two months, with the support of everyone I have met along the way, I’ve been fortunate to see first hand, some of the work done for seafarers by AoS chaplains and ship visitors round the country. I’ve visited ships and also seen the gratitude felt by those same seafarers for such concern. If this ride raises public awareness of our dependence on seafarers and of the AoS people who care for their welfare, it has been worthwhile.

David has raised over £10,000 so far, however he is still working towards meeting his £100,000 target.
