A Unique Club in Hull

Hull and District Catholic Women’s Luncheon Club

Founded in April 1962 by a group of women who came from various parishes around the Hull area, Hull and District Catholic Women’s Luncheon Club is believed to be the only such Club in England.

What was, and still is, its purpose?

To bring together in friendship women from different parishes in what is now the Southern Vicariate. By 1963, the Club decided to work each year to raise money for a charity nominated by the President. Initially, the charities supported were Catholic: Yorkshire Brethren, Diocesan Rescue Fund, University Chaplaincy, Catholic Handicapped Fellowship and, just recently, St Charles Restoration Fund, to name but a few. Latterly, other charities have benefited: a local kidney dialysis group, St Andrew’s Children’s Hospice in Grimsby, the Chernobyl Children’s Fund. This year, the charity is the Marie Curie Cancer Care.

When and where are meetings? The second Tuesday of each month, except August, at the Portland Hotel, Paragon Street, Hull at 12.15 pm for 12.45 pm when speakers are invited to entertain or educate after the meal. In December, members invite local priests, husbands and friends to their Christmas luncheon – last year, Bishop Terry joined us.

How can I find out more? Telephone the President, Mrs E Hutton, on (01482) 840596 or the Secretary, Mrs M Flood, on (01482) 857253 and come along and join a group of very ordinary women who belong to what is still believed to be the only Club of its kind in England!
