Bishop Drainey blesses new facilities at St Mary’s School, Market Weighton

In 1896, the Langdale family of Houghton Hall bought some land in Market Weighton to build a Catholic School. This building was in use until a new school was erected a few hundred yards further along Sancton Road in 1968.

Since the construction of the A1079 by-pass, Market Weighton town has increased in population. In 2005, two new classrooms and a PE hall were added. Earlier this year, it was decided to provide better accommodation for the headteacher and school secretary. New regulations regarding disabled access and facilities required certain adjustments to be made at the front of the building. All this work was completed after Easter this year and on 7th May, Bishop Drainey came to bless the new entrance to the School.

This proved to be a very enjoyable occasion and the children, staff, parents, governors and friends from the parish were all delighted to have the Bishop with them.

Two thousand and eight marks 40 years of Catholic Education on the present site; celebrations began with Mass on the feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 27th June at St Mary’s Church, Market Weighton.
