Forty-eight catechists from parishes all over the diocese met to follow Catechist Formation Pathway 1 over four online and in-person sessions.
The course was led by adult formation co-ordinator Nicola Sweetman, who shared her wisdom and experience, making the content relevant to everyday life, accessible to all and very enjoyable.
Sessions helped participants to explore what catechesis is and how it can be done. It covered encounter with Christ and accompanying others as they journey through spiritual curiosity to discipleship.
Participants learned about the tasks of catechesis, such as leading others to knowledge of the faith and introducing them to community life, as well as sources that can be used to help others learn such as the Word of God, the lives of the saints and Christian art and architecture.
Throughout the course there was an emphasis on importance of community and growing in faith together.
The sessions provided a great opportunity to meet people working in different parishes, working with both children and adults and to share experiences of catechesis.
The course included those new to catechesis as well as those with a wealth of experience over many years. There really was something for everyone, no matter their starting point.
The final session concluded with a joyful celebration of Mass, in which Canon John Lumley offered words of encouragement and inspiration, as well as blessing catechists as they continue God’s work in parishes.
