Coming Home

A famous painting by the 17th Century Dutch artist Rembrandt called ‘The Return of The Prodigal Son’ has been the inspiration for Hornsea artist Theresa Halls to paint her ideas of the same subject. In her case, the finished work is on display in the gardens of Sacred Heart RC Church in the town as a part of the ‘Walk of Faith’ that offers a tranquil location for those in need of a place of undisturbed reflection or private prayer.

In order to protect her painting from the rigours of the weather, it is only on display at this time of year in fine weather, mainly at the weekend.

The original painting is Rembrandt’s interpretation of the parable of the Prodigal Son as contained in the Bible. Theresa’s vision is similar in relation to the depiction of the main characters but with a different background. She said ‘It was quite difficult to do because the original painting is in portrait mode while mine had to be in landscape mode. I looked at children’s Bible books to get some additional ideas and this is the finished result. It took me about six weeks to complete.’
