Young people of St John of Beverley Parish celebrated Youth Sunday with a Christ the King concert and launched the Advent appeal for AIDS orphans in Uganda and street children in Mongolia.

More than 30 took part, from beginners on flute, clarinet and trumpet to a bassoon quintet (a very rare sight) and the concert closed with the Children’s Choir leading an enthusiastic audience in singing hymns to Christ the King.

This is the second Christ the King concert and the young people raised £500 for two projects with which the parish has links. Fr Patrick Serge, a missionary priest at the Cathedral of St Peter in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia runs a programme supporting street children and his Christmas Party draws more each year. Some of those children are now being supported in their studies at school and college too. Bega kwa Bega (Shoulder to Shoulder) was started by past pupils of the Canonesses of St Augustine in Uganda and works to establish local projects to provide sources of income for AIDS orphaned families and communities.
