Ash Wednesday saw a focus for prayer and action concerning the future of fossil fuels in the UK.
The government is in the process of consulting the public on whether to end new drilling for oil and gas.
Green Christian, together with many other environmental organisations including Operation Noah, Christian Climate Action and the Laudato Si’ Movement, joined together to use this time to help our government to listen to science and justice and to end fossil fuel drilling in the UK.
They held a 24-hour vigil outside the Department Of Energy, Science and Net Zero starting at noon on Ash Wednesday.
Lent is a wonderful opportunity for us to renew our relationship with God’s creation and to continue our search for right relationship with the natural world.
The words of Pope Benedict on January 1 2010 resonate here.
He said: “If you want to cultivate peace, protect creation.”
That statement rings true with more urgency today than it did 15 years ago.
