Papal honour for Hull man

Congratulations to Patrick Doyle (seen here with Kevin McNamara, former MP and fellow KSG) on the award of the Knighthood of St Gregory the Great.

Bishop Terry made the presentation to Patrick, a former lecturer, councillor, school governor and member of the Yorkshire Churches Regional Commission and current Trustee of St Stephen’s Neighbourhood Centre and Chair of the Hull Freetown Society.

Patrick, born 1939, is married to Janet. They have four daughters and seven grandchildren, one of them deceased.

Patrick was a Lecturer in History at Endsleigh College of Education, which became Humberside College of Education then Humberside University and is now Lincoln University. He was also a City Councillor from 1972 to 2003 and Leader from 1979 to 2001. In addition he was Chair of the Labour Group on the Association of District Councils.

Patrick has been a Governor of numerous schools including St Mary’s College Hull, Endsleigh Primary and St Richards Primary in Hull and was a member of the Yorkshire Churches Regional Commission.

He has been the recipient of a number of other honours;

  • Honorary Alderman Hull City Council
  • Hon D. Litt. – University of Lincoln
  • Hon LLD – University of Hull
  • Order of Falcon (Iceland), and
  • Order of the Republic (Sierra Leone)

Currently Patrick is:

  • Trustee of St Stephen’s Neighbourhood Centre
  • Chair of Emmaus Hull
  • Organiser of St Charles Drop In for the Homeless
  • Provincial President of Lay Dominicans, and
  • Chair of Hull Freetown Society

He is also server, reader, Eucharistic Minister, catechist, parish Council member, SVP member at St Charles Borromeo in Hull.
