Queen Elizabeth honours Dr Jim Whiston

Congratulations to Dr Jim Whiston on receiving the OBE. Although this honour was in recognition of his outstanding service to science, it would be remiss of us, were we to let this moment pass without expressing our appreciation for the numerous contributions Jim generously makes to both the local and national Church.

Long before he retired from his gainful occupation with ICI Jim was actively involved with, and contributing his extensive expertise to, various national bodies. At the diocesan level his dedicated professionalism was an invaluable asset to our bishops and diocese. Typically, on his retirement, he was to offer Bishop John some “additional hours” to serve the local Church, and perhaps little did Jim realise that this would work out as a “full-time assignment”!

A few years ago Pope John Paul II of happy memory recognised Jim’s loyal service and honoured him as a Knight of St Gregory. Much more could be written in appreciation of the often-unseen roles Jim exercises on our behalf. It might be worthwhile noting in conclusion that Jim’s early influence and formation was through the Young Christian Workers Movement, whose founder, Monsignor Josef Cardijn devised a simple guide for young Catholics: SEE – JUDGE – ACT. Jim can always SEE the need – his Faith always leads him to JUDGE what must be done – he is never too afraid nor ungenerous to ACT for others. On behalf of us all, Thank You, Jim, and thanks too to his wife Tess and children Clare and John Patrick for sharing him with us.
