St Mary’s College, Middlesbrough successes

Students at St Mary’s College in Middlesbrough are celebrating an A level pass rate in 2008 of 95%. No fewer than 17 subjects have a 100% pass rate, and there are many outstanding individual performances, including six students, Rachel Clyburn, Clare Loughlin, Thomas Murphy, Paolo Rago, Laurence Smith, and Andrew Walls, who have 19 grade As between them.

Andrew and Clare are both going to the University of Oxford to read History, whilst Paolo and Rachel are both going to Warwick to read Mathematics. Laurence and Thomas are both going to Leeds to read Mathematics and Finance, and Economics and Geography respectively.

The Principal, Don Lillistone, said he was delighted with the results which ‘reflect the very hard work of both the students and staff’. The Vice Principal, Andy Jankowski, added that ‘many students overcome significant obstacles to learning in order to achieve’.

A fine example is Yusrh Wagieallah, who came to St Mary’s as an asylum seeker from the Sudan in 2005. Having first successfully taken a one year intermediate course, Yusrh has gained two Bs and a C in her A levels and has a place at the University of East Anglia to read Pharmacy.
