St Peter’s celebrates its 150th Birthday

On 2nd July 1858, St Peter’s Church on Scarborough’s North Cliff was solemnly opened as the first Catholic Church in the town, replacing a small chapel on an adjoining site, and 50 years later on 2nd July 1908, the Church was consecrated by Bishop Lacy. So on 2nd July 2008, Bishop Terry and Fr John Loughlin, parish priest, were joined by many of the priests who had served in the parish over the years including Mgr Dasey VG for a concelebrated Mass of thanksgiving to celebrate the 150th anniversary.

The Mayor of Scarborough (Councillor Mrs Vickers), her consort and leaders of local churches joined the parish congregation for the Mass. In his homily, the Bishop reminded us that whilst buildings are important, it is the parishioners – the living stones – who must be the evangelisers, and make the Good News known to all.

After Mass, the celebration continued as stories of years past were shared by priests and parishioners.
