York students support CAFOD

Students from York University defied the forecast for rain on 7th June and held a barbecue at More House in Heslington to celebrate their fundraising achievements when they handed over a cheque for £1,330.03 to Carol Cross, Diocesan Officer for CAFOD Middlesbrough (Catholic Agency for Overseas Development), who is based in York. Carol said ‘They have given much more than I had ever anticipated and always exceeded any of my expectations, both in raising funds and supporting our work; they should be very proud of themselves’.

The students, who are part of the Catholic Society (CASSOC) at the University, raised the money from busking in York City Centre and from bag-packing in a local supermarket. As well as completing their studies at the University, they have found the time to work alongside CAFOD staff over the past academic year and picked CAFOD as their chosen charity. Pictured are Hannah Mills and Matthew Sanderson, the former and current CASSOC Presidents, handing over the cheque to Carol Cross watched by other students and the Carmelite Community from More House, where the Catholic Chaplaincy is based. They were joined by other CAFOD supporters who represented a number of York churches.

The money raised will be used by CAFOD in its projects to help ease the suffering people in over 40 countries around the world.
