On 16th May, St John Fisher’s Church, Grimsby, played host to a Seafood Supper organised by Val Walsh, an Apostleship of the Sea volunteer at the Immingham Seafarers Centre. For a donation, each visitor could enjoy a lovely seafood supper prepared and served by the families and members of the local pastoral council.
The church hall was bursting at the seams with people who came to enjoy the food and donate to Apostleship of the Sea. Parishioners from several of the parishes in North East Lincolnshire attended. Aileen Heald, a Ship Visitor in Grimsby and Margaret Barfield, a trainee ship visitor, were also there to help out and share the evening. If supper wasn’t enough, a quiz and a raffle was also held and the total sum of money raised for the evening was £384.40.
The Apostleship of the Sea volunteers in the Humber Region work endlessly to fundraise and raise awareness of Apostleship of the Sea. Without their support and that of dozens of other volunteers around the country, Apostleship of the Sea would not be able to continue its vital work in the support of seafarers. Apostleship of the Sea is the frontline service for the care of seafarers visiting British shores. They provide practical and pastoral care to all seafarers. Their port chaplains and volunteer ship visitors welcome seafarers, offer welfare services and advice, practical help, care and friendship.
