‘Taste and See’ – a second slice

After the success of Taste and See in 2008, Taste and See 2009, a day of Bite-Size Spirituality, is a ‘second slice’ of this wonderful way to experience different types of prayer and worship in a friendly and engaging setting. A variety of workshops are being offered on Saturday 13th June in York city centre by Christians of different denominations, allowing participants to try new ways of relating to God and to one another.

Taste and See offers a rich breadth of Christian spirituality. Some types of prayer engage the heart whilst others engage the head; some involve physical movement whilst others promote stillness. Some are about the practical application of faith whilst others are more abstract in their approach. Some use challenging images and ideas whilst others are more comforting and calming. Some encourage corporate prayer, perhaps with music, whilst others nurture private prayer in silence.

The day has been endorsed by many church leaders including Rt Rev Terence Drainey, Rt Rev Martin Wallace (Bishop of Selby, Anglican), Rev Kevin Watson (Moderator of the United Reform Church, Yorkshire Synod), Rev Ernie Whalley (Yorkshire Baptist Association) and Rev Richard M Andrew (York Institute for Community Theology, Methodist).

These forms of prayer attract people in different ways because people are all different, and God reaches out to us in many and various ways.

Taste and See is being organised by CoRE York and representatives from several Christian organisations. CoRE’s Chairman, Rev Canon Simon Stanley, said ‘Taste and See is a fun and informative way of exploring different types of prayer in an ecumenical context. The event is open to everyone with individuals travelling from as far-a-field as Birmingham in 2008. Trying a new experience of worship allows those participating to discover more about themselves and their spiritual tastes. This may lead to a better understanding of their fellow Christians who pray in ways different to them, and deepen their relationship with God.’

The day will commence at 9.30 am on Saturday 13th June 2009 in York Minster with keynote speaker Rev Graham Maskery, ending at 4.00 pm with final worship led by Fr Tony Lester in All Saints Pavement Church. Participants will have the opportunity to join two of a selection of 16 workshops being held in the churches located in York City Centre.

Taste and See 2009 offers you an opportunity to experience different ways of prayer and spiritual traditions through worship, workshops and discussion.
