York Catholic History Day

The annual York Catholic History Day will take place at the Bar Convent on Saturday 7th June 2008. The History days, which are co-sponsored by the Catholic Record Society, The English Catholic History Association and the Postgate Society, offer a varied programme of talks which appeal to anyone with an interest in Catholic History and attract an audience from Catholic, local and family history societies as well as others with a general interest.

Last year Martin Craven gave a paper on ‘Faith in Adversity: Evidence of Catholicism in Holderness, in the East Riding of Yorkshire in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries’; Moira Fulton gave a paper on ‘Three Catholic Landowners: contrasting Catholicism in mid-eighteenth century Yorkshire’ and Dr James Hagerty presented a paper on ‘The African Ministry of Archbishop Arthur Hinsley’.

This year Adam Morton (University of York) will present a paper on ‘The Coverdale Bible: putting Holbein’s frontispiece in perspective’; Nadine Lwycky (University of York) will present a paper on ‘Bishop Tunstall, 1530 – 1559’ and Emma Watson (Borthwick Institute) will present her paper entitled ‘Ringing in the Changes: responses to the Elizabethan Act of Settlement in Yorkshire, 1560 – 1580’.

The day will begin with coffee at 10.00 am and there will be two talks in the morning and one in the afternoon. The day will close with Mass in the Convent Chapel at 5.00 pm. The cost of the day will be £12.50 (no increase on last year’s charge), £6.00 for students and the unwaged, to include tea or coffee in the morning and afternoon, payable on the day. Light lunches are available in the Museum Cafe and there will be an opportunity to visit the Museum during the extended lunch break.
